Why Do F1 Cars Have No Starter Motor?

Every car you have ever been in had one. An ignition key, or these days a start button. One touch, a whirr, and the engine runs. You never even thought about it, because it is that natural.

F1 cars, the most advanced racing machines in the world, do not have that "ordinary" feature. An F1 driver cannot start their own car alone. The mechanism to do it is not even on the car.

So why?

In F1, every gram is a battle

Formula 1 engineers hold one belief to the point of obsession: anything unnecessary slows you down.

Cars have a minimum weight limit, and teams work like jewellers to reach it from below. Every screw, every cable, every panel is weighed. A kilogram of extra weight costs roughly three hundredths of a second per lap. Across a season, that is a championship.

What does a starter motor mean? An electric motor, a gear mechanism, extra wiring, a bigger battery. Carrying tens of kilograms for a system you use once in the garage. By F1 logic that is close to murder.

So the solution is simple but clever: take the starter motor off the car and put it outside.

How is an F1 car started?

Starting an F1 car is a completely different experience from starting your car at home. It is not one mechanic but a whole crew.

At the back of the car, right in the middle of the diffuser, there is a small hole. A mechanic picks up what is called an external starter — essentially a giant industrial drill. They push a long shaft into that hole and lock it into the gears in the gearbox. Press the button and a 24-volt motor starts turning the shaft. The shaft turns the crankshaft, the crank turns the engine, and the engine fires.

But hold on, it is not that easy. Before you start the engine you have to circulate hot oil through it.

A cold F1 engine seizes like stone

Here is the part most people do not know: below 60°C an F1 engine is locked solid.

The reason is the astonishing precision with which the parts fit together. The tolerances are so tight that when cold the pistons literally seize in the cylinders. The only thing that frees them is the parts expanding as the engine warms.

So before starting an F1 car the mechanics heat the engine to around 80°C with an external system. Hot oil is circulated and the engine blocks are warmed. A road car needs nothing of the sort; you will start it happily at −10°C. An F1 engine will not turn over at all at that temperature.

This is a choice in engineering: sacrificing some reliability for performance. F1 engines are designed for one purpose — to make the most power in the shortest time. Everything else is detail.

What if it stalls on track?

This is exactly why a car stalling on track is such a dramatic moment in F1.

If a normal car stalls, the driver turns the key again and drives on. An F1 car is not like that. If the engine dies — and although modern hybrid systems carry anti-stall mechanisms to prevent it — the driver usually cannot restart and rejoin. That external starter is not there; it is in the garage, in the crew's hands.

Marshals push the car safely to the side of the track, and a dedicated crew comes to start it after the race. For the driver, that race is over. Sometimes a race worth millions of euros ends on a single stall.

That is why F1 drivers focus so precisely on throttle control through a race. In corners, at the start and on pit exit, one wrong move can cost them the biggest disappointment of their career.

The hidden philosophy of F1

The starter-motor story tells you the whole logic of Formula 1.

In other cars, comfort, durability and convenience come first. In F1 every part is designed around one question: does this make the car faster? If the answer is no, the part is gone.

There is a famous line attributed to Ferrari's founder Enzo Ferrari: "The perfect race car crosses the finish line first and then falls to pieces." A slight exaggeration, but the substance is right. An F1 car does not try to be a car in its own right. It tries to be the fastest possible thing at a particular hour, on a particular track, for a particular length of time.

Having no starter motor is one of the finest examples of that philosophy. It looks like a detail; it is really a summary of a whole engineering culture.

Next time you watch an F1 race, look for that odd-looking device behind the cars on the grid. It is not scenery. It is the key to an F1 car. 🏎️
