Tips for Training in Cold Weather

As the weather turns, training can start to feel impossible. Getting up in the morning gets harder, going outside starts to loom, and staying under the blanket becomes more appealing than ever.

But remember: giving up sport in winter affects your fitness and your mood alike. With the right preparation and a few small tactics you can hold your form through winter — and even get stronger.

Here are six tips for keeping your motivation up and your training sustainable in the cold:

1. Make a winter plan

Days get shorter in winter and it goes dark early, which affects your energy. So set yourself realistic goals. Instead of "I will run at six every morning", start with something reachable like "30 minutes of exercise three days a week". Small but consistent steps bring far stronger results over time.

2. Choose the right clothing and you will not feel the cold

The secret to training in winter is dressing in layers. Three layers make training far more comfortable. A thermal base layer, a cotton sweatshirt and a shell on top keep your body temperature up and stop you getting cold once you sweat.

Note: do not sacrifice comfort in what you wear. Uncomfortable clothing hurts your motivation.

3. Move indoors

When it turns very cold or the rain starts, training outdoors gets hard. Fortunately, holding your form with Sporsepeti is easy. Through the app or the website you can pick the sports that interest you, filter the indoor venues nearest you and book straight away.

Stay warm, and stay in training.

4. Find a training partner and raise your motivation

The most common reason for losing motivation in winter is training alone. Training with a friend raises your enjoyment and keeps you both motivated. On the days you think "I could skip it today", your partner gets you moving.

If you cannot find a training partner, you can join group activities through the Sporsepeti app, meet new people and keep your motivation alive.

5. Do not skip the warm-up — muscles are more vulnerable in the cold

In cold weather muscles and joints are tighter, which raises the risk of injury.

Always warm up for ten minutes before training:

  • An easy walk or skipping
  • Arm and hip circles
  • Short sets of squats and lunges

As your body warms up your circulation quickens, your energy rises and your training performance improves.

6. Reward yourself, celebrate your discipline

One of the most effective ways to sustain motivation is encouraging yourself with small rewards. When you complete a week's training goal, buy a new piece of kit, treat yourself to a hot coffee, or share your weekly activity summary and enjoy the sense of achievement.

In short: winter is not an excuse to stop training. It is a perfect opportunity to strengthen your consistency. With the right planning, the right clothing, warm venues and a little discipline, you can hold your motivation even in the cold.

Discover the indoor venues that suit you with Sporsepeti, plan activities with friends, and spend this winter with energy.
